It was actually just before her college graduation that Amelia found out that her beloved Uncle James had died. The year she was born, in fact.
“You’re having me on.” She said, staring incredulously at her mum. “I’ve met Uncle James. He always comes round for my birthdays, and he tells the best stories.”
Her mother fidgeted.
“Well.” She said finally. “You know your dad, right?”
“Yeah. Off sailing round the world in that airship of his.” She stopped. “He’s not dead too, is he?”
Her mother shook her head. “No, but he’s… well. He’s the Captain of the Flying Dutchman.”
“What, as in the semi-mythical sailing ship crewed by the damned? That’s gotta be a joke. Dad’s ship runs on aether, just like everyone else's. “
Her mother just looked helplessly at her.
“Didn’t you ever wonder why he only went on land every 10 years?” she asked.
“But he always wrote!” Amelia objected. “And I got to visit him on the Endeavour!”
Her mother sighed.
“I was figured I was lucky he showed up at all, even if he didn’t come to my stuff.” Amelia finally said, quietly.
“Oh honey.” Her mum said, and hugged her. After their touching moment was done, Amelia looked up at her mother.
“Uncle James.” She said firmly.
“Is part of your father’s crew.” Her mother replied.
“And dead, apparently.”
“Yes. But it’s… complicated.”
“So can he or can’t he come to my graduation?”
“I… don’t know.” Her mother said finally. “He’s coming by after dinner on Friday, you can ask him then.”
“Okay.” Amelia nodded.
